Menu when ib kofod-larsen designed the chair,
Menu the penguin chair was designed by ib kofod-larsen and went into production in 1953. it is light, elegant, sculptural and artistic. a mid-century bestseller and a danish modern icon. the name penguin comes from its playful shape: it is as if a small penguin is about to embrace you when you sit down. the penguin-shaped flippers on the back of the chair are typical of ib kofod-larsen’s aesthetic approach and organic simplicity. the back becomes part of the body which ensures comfort and support as well as a unique sitting experience.
Menu his priority was the person sitting in the chair. the curved back and the angled seat cradle the body and provide a surprisingly high level of comfort in the otherwise very simple design. the proportions of the slightly oversized seat and back—the large organically shaped shells in contrast with the petite, delicate frame—have a naïve feel to them. but at the same time the penguin is a sophisticated chair with personality. relaunched in dining, lounge and rocker iterations, the penguin chair is crafted with an oak, walnut or teak veneer back and upholstered seat.
