Ronald Van der Hilst

onald Van der Hilst (1965) artista e paesaggista di

origine olandese, si trasferì ad Anversa nel 1993,

anno in cui la città era Capitale Culturale Europea.

Inizialmente si concentrò sulla progettazione di giardini e

paesaggi. Nonostante sia iniziato come un gioco, il tulipano

è diventato un tema costante nel suo lavoro per ben dieci

anni. Appassionato amante dei fiori già in tenera età, è rimasto

colpito dalla storia meravigliosa eppur segreta di come il

tulipano abbia compiuto il suo lungo percorso dalla culla natia

nell’Asia centrale, passando da Istanbul, fino ad approdare ad

Anversa nel 1562, dove fece il suo ingresso ufficiale in Europa

addirittura trent’anni prima che il primissimo di questi bulbi

fiorisse ad Amsterdam! Ha capito che, da olandese, non aveva

mai avuto davvero la mente aperta verso questa icona floreale.

Soltanto nel 2005 comincia a occuparsi di design di prodotti e

da allora la sua collezione di “progetti di tulipani” ha incluso la

creazionedelvasodicristallopertulipani“Bulbe”,realizzatoda

Val Saint Lambert, aggiunto alla collezione di vasi per tulipani

della regina Beatrice d’Olanda. I suoi vasi per tulipani sono stati

esposti, inoltre, anche al Paleis Het Loo National Museum. Ha

collaborato con alcuni designer di moda realizzando numerose

fantasie di tulipani su abiti, ha pubblicato un libro, ha creato

murali, rilievi, sculture, gioielli, scatole, lampadari, illustrazioni

e cartoline, creazioni tutte accomunate dal tema del tulipano.

Inoltre Ronald van der Hilst ha progettato scenografie di

tulipani per i giardini storici del Rubens Museum, il Plantin

Moretus Museum, il Den Brandt Castle e il Kalmthout

Arboretum.

onald Van der Hilst (1965) dutch-born artist and

landscape designer, moved to Antwerp in 1993

when the city was Cultural Capital of Europe.

Initially he concentrated on designing garden and landscape

projects. Although it started as a joke, the tulip has become

a constant theme in his work for 10 years. As a passionate

flower lover from early age, he was touched by the

marvellous but hidden history of how the tulip made her

way from its cradle in Central-Asia via Istanbul to Antwerp

in 1562, where the tulip made its grand entry in Europe even

30 years before the first tulip flowered in Amsterdam! He

realised that he - as a Dutchman - had never really had an

open mind towards this icon flower. He only started in 2005

with product design and since then his collection of “tulip

designs” includes the crystal tulip vase “Bulbe”, fashioned

by Val Saint Lambert, which has been added to the tulip

vase collection of the Dutch Queen Beatrix. His tulip vases

have been exhibited in - amongst others - Paleis Het Loo

National Museum. In collaboration with some fashion

designers he made tulip drawings on clothes, published a

book, created murals, reliefs, sculptures, jewellery, boxes,

chandeliers, illustrations and postcards all with the tulip as a

theme. Also, Ronald van der Hilst designed tulip settings for

the historical gardens of the Rubens Museum, the Plantin

Moretus Museum, Den Brandt Castle and the Kalmthout

Arboretum.
