The Nantou City Guesthouse is an eleven-room hotel
set directly in the heart of Shenzhen, China’s technology
hub often referred to as the Eastern Silicon Valley. In
designing the space, Shanghai-based architects Neri&Hu
were inspired by the city’s unique urban fabric, which they
described as a modern metropolis peppered with pre-
industrial settlements and “tightly knit alleys, plazas, and
dead-ends, where residents, street vendors, unsupervised
children and nomads alike roam”.
The hotel’s interior channels a similarly industrial
aesthetic. Characterised by bare concrete surfaces, black
iron stairwells and wide floor-to-ceiling windows that look
out over the cityscape, Neri&Hu opted to furnish the hotel
rooms with sophisticated modern furniture. Mid-century-
inspired wooden sofas, low brass tables and Scandinavian-
style blond wooden seating balance out the concrete and
metal. In the bathrooms, the architects introduced a shock
of jewel-tone colour in the form of glossy green tiles that
beautifully contrast the deep Immersion soaker tub, which
Neri&Hu custom designed for Agape.

Nantou City Guesthouse è un piccolo hotel di 11 camere
incastonato nel cuore di Shenzhen, polo tecnologico cinese
che si è guadagnato il titolo di Silicon Valley d’Oriente. Nel
progettarlo gli architetti dello studio di Shangai Neri&Hu si
sono ispirati al particolare tessuto urbano della città, che
descrivono come “una metropoli moderna costellata di
edifici preindustriali, dove la popolazione, un miscuglio di
residenti, nomadi, venditori ambulanti e bambini di strada, si
muove fra i vicoli, le piazze e le stradine senza uscita”.
Gli interni della guesthouse riprendono l’estetica
industriale del contesto urbano. Superfici in cemento
grezzo, scale in ferro nero e grandi finestre a tutta altezza
affacciate sulla città. A bilanciare ferro e cemento, la
raffinatezza degli arredi: divani in legno dal sapore anni ’50,
tavolini bassi in ottone e sedute in stile scandinavo. Nelle
stanze da bagno, un’autentica esplosione di colori gioiello,
come il verde lucido delle piastrelle, crea un magnifico
contrasto con la vasca da bagno Immersion, molto
profonda e confortevole, disegnata da Neri&Hu per Agape.
The guesthouse’s interior echoes the industrial
aesthetic of the urban context: rough concrete
surfaces, black iron stairs, and large floor-to-ceiling
windows are balanced by the sophistication of
the furnishings.
