Regal yet relaxed
The feminine counterpart to the Ox Chair is
Hans J. Wegner’s Queen Chair, which shares
many of the same features. With its ample,
almost cylindrical armrests and high, majestic
back that extends up to support the neck,
the Queen Chair is an equal match for the Ox
Chair’s masculine presence. Regal yet relaxed,
the Queen Chair embodies Wegner’s belief that
for a design to be striking it must be based
on practicality.
In 1960, the Ox Chair and the Queen Chair
were presented together at the Dansk
Købestævne exhibition, an annual showcase
for Danish industry and crafts, which included
an exhibition of furniture. It was a forerunner to
trade fairs as a meeting place for craftsmen,
industrialists and merchants to purchase and
promote Danish crafts.
The Queen Chair is one of Wegner’s most
elegant lounge chairs. It’s a true icon in its own
right, admired for its sophisticated construction
and sculptural aesthetic. It captures the
essence of Wegner’s innovative approach to
design, which is at once organic and artistic.
While at the same time, firmly based on
functionalism.
