Muuto "i wanted the table to have its own character but not be imposing. the design aim was to reduce the table to its arche- typal form. the functional simplicity of base is supported by behind-the-scenes technology to create a slim, lightweight and strong table. at the same time, base is friendly and welcoming in the way it looks."
Muuto "storage is important because it is so universal: everybody needs good solutions. the inspiration for the compile shelving system was indeed the everyday storage situation. the design, with its logical construction, parallels to a certain degree an unpretentious scandinavian lifestyle—one shelf represents one building unit while the length of the tube defines the shelf height. in this simple way one can assemble practical formations that fit individual needs—compile should reflect and accommodate the life of which it is part."

Muuto "the couple coffee table was born out of my research into a traditional and essential piece of furniture — the coffee table. i wanted to come up with a new yet subtle take on its typical materials and typology. i was inspired by the materiality of fired earth like brick and terracotta, finding that a beautiful synergy occurs when it is combined with wood. i have always been drawn to texture and wanted couple’s design to have an inherently tactile character produced by the grainy feel of the tile’s surface. the design allows you to choose between or combine tiles with a smooth surface or a soft wavy look."
Muuto "the cover chair series is born from a desire to create a com- fortable and contemporary chair in wood. i aimed for a crisp and vivid expression in the plywood while looking for a solid and grounded look in the frame and base of the design. years of play and hard work in the making has resulted in a light, yet strong chair design that takes the material of veneer to its extreme."
Muuto "scandinavia has a long tradition of extensively comfortable lounge chairs; at the heart of our design heritage lies the versatile concept of comfort. as such, the idea of creating a grand lounge chair came very natural to us. the visual references of the doze lounge chair are however derived from the modern and clear lines of the golden age in danish design, while at the same time being informed by some of our favorite designs of the 1970’s. to us, the characteristically large and sheltering back that embraces the soft seat creates a combination of the scandinavian design ethos and the lines of 1970’s objects in a way that we find truly refreshing."

Muuto "enfold sideboard came from the many factory visits that i do as a designer, prompting me to explore the aesthetic appeal of industrial objects. i wanted to translate this element into the modern home, combined with an appreciation of the scandina- vian design tradition. the enfold sideboard joins a warm touch of oak with a contemporary look of its ridged front, softening up the cold steel material and binding it together with the side- board’s oak components. the design is a new perspective on the traditional sideboard with an at once industrial and homey feeling, characterized by its unique duality of materials."
Muuto "one of the most difficult and noble disciplines is to design without eccentricity, creating simple, well-functioning and almost ordinary objects that nevertheless have strong identities. we designed the fiber chair family to do just that through a clear sculptural language that refuses to compromise on comfort. it’s a chair stripped of all unnecessary layers. the iconic form combines soft, embracing curves with an innovative wood fiber composite, giving the fiber chair family a unique expression and tactile texture."

Muuto “midst table is a meeting between the poetic and functional. the name refers to the center and the table being a gravitational point, while its round shape cancels out hierarchy — there is no head of the table. its shape naturally draws us in towards its middle, encouraging a meeting of minds and eyes. our design process was one of subtraction and refinement. the midst table’s form and construction was inspired by an iconic architectural feature, the column, merging a physical stability and steadfastness with a sense of elegance.”
Muuto "the nature of design can be split into two parts: the specific and the generic. one is having a unique expression and the other is serving an obvious function. i found that shelving systems often only had one of the two and from there grew the idea for mini stacked. the modules have been designed from the generic measures of objects to store and display while allowing for them to be combined in any way you'd like. mini stacked can be placed in a vibrant configuration that plays with the varying sizes or in a simple grid, both serving its purpose of efficient yet unique wall storage."

Muuto "the idea for the beam table lamp came while renovating my childhood home. i had made a shelf to use as divider between the hallway and living room and needed a lamp that could at once throw light out into the living room and down the hallway. the beam table lamp mimics a single ray of light that travels through a round tube with its dimmer allowing the user to change the volume of light omitted from both ends of the cylinder shape. tweak the design to your personal needs through its rotating base and sleek body of anodized aluminum, whether it be as direct lighting or for an ambient glow. with the beam table lamp, you can alter the volume of light omitted, change its direction by the turn of its base and place it on any shelf, table or windowsill for a new perspective on modern lighting."

Muuto "my idea for piton started from the desire to create a rechargeable portable lamp that could be adapted in a multitude of ways while functioning in various environments. i wanted the design to fulfill the inherent needs of a torch; providing security and warmth while clearly illuminating your field of vision. piton takes its name from a climbing apparatus that is jammed into cracks and crevices on mountainsides to which the climber can attach hooks, tools and ropes while rigging it in various positions; an element that is also present in the design of the piton portable lamp."

Muuto "mere bowl was inspired by a small porcelain piece salla made on the pottery wheel in our studio — the contrast between its conical round shape and the strict line of its bottom inspired us to continue experimenting with it. initially prototyping with pa- per, we created bowl-like surfaces through folding, later moving from bendable materials to the rigidity of plaster. we wanted it to be as much a humble and utilitarian item as an elegant standalone sculptural form, casting beautiful shadows when empty."

Muuto ”making reduce paper bin from recycled material was the start- ing point for us. it was an exercise in reduction; of the design elements involved, our carbon footprint and in the end, the amount of waste in the office. our process was about finding the most efficient form while making it sculptural and recog- nizable. its racetrack shape has the advantage of easily fitting under a desk while the lid is gesture, a fold that gently rests on top of the bin, neatly hiding the trash bag below.”

Muuto "it was focal to us that the raise carafe & glass brought a subtle yet characterful ethos to the traditional craft of mouth-blown glass, adding a lightly elegant sentiment in daily life. after working through different ideas and sketches, we were inspired by the generic shapes of bottles and glasses in modernist still life paintings and felt that their silhouettes struck the balance of being at once timeless yet bursting with character. in essence, the raise carafe & glass find their identity through their organic lines, encouraging the pieces to be raised when with friends, family and in everyday life."

Muuto "the relevo rug came to be as it often does; on the drawing board with paper and pencil. we like to create a whole story around a project, this time with a rug that could be a sculpture in its own right, virtually changing the perception of a room. relevo’s swooping lines were inspired by land art and its sometimes furrowed, hypnotic paths in the soil. relevo means relief in latin, emblematic of the rug’s geometric pattern, made by trimming the hand tufted rug in levels and thereby creating a subtle effect of light and shadow, a compelling visual expression."

Muuto "the idea for the ridge vase came while traveling through different cities with a vase in mind, searching for details that had an architectural feel. upon returning to our studio in finland, we began sketching by hand and making mock-ups in paper and ceramics. with its vertical lines and unique shape, inspired by a doorway in paris, the ridge vase presents a new way to place flowers through a modern expression along with a sculptural character when not in use. the ridge vase manipulates the oval form through its refined dent while adding the function of a small handle to use when moving the vase from one room to another."
Muuto "the silent vase was about reducing a vase to the simplest of expressions, allowing for its shapes to take centerstage and add character to the object. with its simple and almost airy expres- sion, the silent vase adds an elegantly light touch to any atmo- sphere, both with and without flowers."
