Con questo libro vorrei raccontarvi il nostro lavoro e le nostre
esperienze attraverso immagini, riflessioni e appunti di viaggio
raccolti qua e là in giro per il mondo.
Alla fine degli anni Ottanta iniziai a inventare e produrre lampade con
l’idea di fare una collezione esattamente come quella che presento
ora: lampade in cui semplicità, leggerezza, emozione e invenzione
sono gli ingredienti fondamentali.
Le lampade e le soluzioni luminose che inventiamo ogni giorno
sono il nostro linguaggio: le parole che utilizziamo per raccontare
le nostre storie. Storie fatte di luce. Perché la luce è racconto.
La luce valorizza angoli nascosti, suggerisce soluzioni impreviste
e dettagli dimenticati. Sottrae, crea pieni e vuoti, sottolinea
gesti ed espressioni. La luce non è mai neutra, agisce come
protagonista indirizzando il corso dei nostri pensieri e delle nostre
azioni. Necessaria per illuminare, ma anche per sedurre, dare
un senso di mistero, suggerire metafore e immaginare scenari
destinati a diventare il teatro mobile e cangiante della nostra vita.
Uno dei principali problemi che affrontiamo quando progettiamo
è quello di pensare ogni volta a una luce mai vista prima.
Cerchiamo di realizzare progetti in grado di andare oltre la tecnica,
il colore, il materiale. In una lampada vogliamo trovare altro:
esplorazione e autenticità, narrazione e passione.
Le nostre lampade appaiono sempre semplici, talvolta scarne, ma
la loro austerità nasconde sempre idee e realizzazioni complesse.
Penso che ogni lampada sia come la mano di un mago: è lei a
produrre l’incantesimo, ciò che guardiamo affascinati non è la
mano, è la magia. Il nostro è un lavoro di sintesi, in cerca di un’ardua
semplicità che sappia valorizzare al massimo la magia della luce ...
a volte addirittura nascondendo la mano. Le nostre creazioni sono
generose: godono nell’illuminare più che nel farsi vedere, ed è questo
che le rende protagoniste.
In questi trent’anni ho disegnato una geometria di luce tutta mia.
Una luce personale ed eretica, là dove per eresia intendo libertà,
sperimentazione e curiosità. Per questa ragione, qui non troverete
tutte le nostre lampade e anche di quelle presentate non
indicheremo tutte le caratteristiche.
Incontroluce non è, né vuole essere un catalogo completo, ma
una geografia emozionale del mio mondo. Quando ho cominciato
a pensare a questo libro, ho deciso di dividerlo in capitoli:
Concetti Spaziali, Wirelessismore, La Lampadina, Fare Luce,
Gioco e Ironia, Luce Fuori. Questo tipo di narrazione mi somiglia
e mi permette di comunicare meglio ciò che sento: ogni titolo
suggerisce un percorso luminoso e una chiave d’interpretazione
possibile.
Nel mio lavoro sono stati determinanti alcuni incontri con persone
speciali. Persone che mi hanno regalato il loro tempo, che mi hanno
insegnato a guardare le cose e a metterle insieme.
Incontroluce è anche un’occasione per ringraziare tutti i miei
fantastici collaboratori e tutte le persone che contribuiscono alla
realizzazione dei nostri progetti. Perché nessuno è più importante,
nella vita, di chi ti aiuta a trasformare i tuoi sogni in realtà.

The idea behind this book is to tell a story, about our work and what
we have learned. It’s a collection of images, reflections and notes we
have gathered while travelling the world over.
I started inventing and making lamps at the end of the 1980’s with
the idea of creating a collection that is exactly like the one we are
presenting here today. The fundamental ingredients we employ are
simplicity, weightlessness, emotion and invention.
Our language is that of the lamps and lighting solutions we come
up with. These are the words we use to tell our stories. They are
stories of light, because light in itself is a story. Light brings to life
hidden corners. It provides us with sudden solutions and detail we
had forgotten. It creates fullness or emptiness. It can take away, or
underline the gestures and expressions of the people around it. Light
is never neutral. It acts as a protagonist, guiding our thoughts and
actions. We need it to see things, but also to seduce, to provide a
sense of mystery to life, to hint at metaphors and provide scenery
destined to become the ever-changing street theatre of our lives.
One of the biggest problems we face while coming up with new
lighting solutions is to try to imagine lamps that have never been
seen before. We are always trying to create things that go beyond
technology, colour or form. We’re searching for something else:
invention, uniqueness, narration, passion.
Our lamps appear simple, even bare at times, but their austerity hides
complex processes and conceptualisation. I believe every lamp is
like the hand of a magician. It provides the enchantment, but what
fascinates us is not the hand; it’s the magic. Our work is one of
synthesis, of reducing something to its essential. It’s the search for
a simplicity that can give the maximum value to the magic of light, at
times even hiding the hand. Our creations are meant to be generous.
They enjoy lighting even more than they enjoy being seen. This is what
makes them so special.
In these thirty years, I have created my own geometry of light.
It’s a personal and rather heretic vision, by heresy, I mean
what distinguishes something from the status quo: freedom,
experimentation, curiosity. That’s why you won’t find all our lamps
here, nor will we inform you as to all the characteristics of the ones
we have decided to present.
Incontroluce is not, nor was intended to be, a complete catalogue
of our products. We have conceived it as a kind of emotional
landscape of my world. When I started thinking about this book, I
decided to divide it into chapters: Concetti Spaziali, Wirelessismore,
La Lampadina, Fare Luce, Gioco e Ironia, Luce Fuori. I figured this kind
of organisation by subject would represent me best and express my
feelings more accurately. Each of these titles indicates a path taken
in the creation of different lighting projects and a possible way to
interpret them.
One aspect of my work that has been essential is meeting special
people, those who have given me their time and taught me how to
look at things in a different way and put them together.
Incontroluce is also a way of thanking these precious collaborators,
people who have actively contributed in the process of conceiving and
creating our lighting projects. No one is more important in life than
those who help you to transform your dreams into reality.
